Steel, Aluminum or Plastic?
The Access Panel Material Decision Guide

The material you specify determines whether a panel can go into a fire-rated wall, how long it survives in a humid environment, and what the per-unit cost looks like at volume. This guide gives procurement teams the data - not the marketing - to make the right call.

Why Material Is a Procurement-Critical Specification

Material is not an aesthetic detail on an access panel order - it determines three things that directly affect your project: whether the panel is legally installable in the wall or ceiling assembly specified, how long it survives in the target environment without maintenance, and what your total cost per unit looks like at volume across your SKU range.

A wrong material call on a large commercial project means failed building inspections, unbudgeted rework, and potential liability exposure. This guide walks through the three materials Shunshi manufactures - steel, aluminum, and plastic - with a decision framework built around procurement criteria, not product promotion.

The Single Most Common Specification Error

Ordering by size without confirming whether the target assembly is fire-rated. A plastic or aluminum panel installed in a 1-hour rated wall is a code violation regardless of how well it fits. Check the fire rating on the building plans before specifying material - not after.

Steel Access Panels: The Commercial Standard

Shunshi steel access panels are produced from galvanized steel or cold-rolled steel sheet at the company's 30,000 m2 ISO 9001-certified factory in Deqing County, Zhejiang. Steel is the default specification for commercial, institutional, and industrial projects globally - the reason is straightforward: it is the only standard access panel material that supports a certified fire resistance rating.

Why Steel Dominates Commercial Procurement

Cold-Rolled vs Galvanized: Get This Right Before Ordering

Cold-rolled steel is standard for consistently dry interior spaces - offices, dry corridors, residential. Hot-dip galvanized steel adds a zinc layer (typically 80-100 g/m2) and is correct for utility rooms, plant rooms, basements, and any location with periodic moisture exposure. Ordering cold-rolled for a wet-area application is a warranty and corrosion risk. Confirm the steel grade in your purchase order, not just verbally.

Aluminum Access Panels: Lightweight & Inherently Corrosion-Resistant

Shunshi aluminum access panels are manufactured from high-grade aluminum alloy. Aluminum does not rust - it forms a natural oxide layer that passivates the surface against further corrosion, requiring no protective coating maintenance to maintain performance. This makes it the correct call for coastal, humid, and chemically active environments where galvanized steel would require ongoing maintenance.

Aluminum panels were among the specifications chosen for landmark hospitality projects served by Shunshi, including the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai - a project where both aesthetics and durability in a coastal, high-humidity environment were specification requirements.

When to Specify Aluminum Over Steel

Finish Options Available from Shunshi

Aluminum panels from Shunshi can be supplied in: mill finish (natural, untreated), anodized silver or black, brushed finish, or powder-coated to standard white or a custom RAL color. Specify the finish requirement in your RFQ. Custom RAL colors are available against a minimum order quantity - confirm with the Shunshi sales team.

Plastic (ABS/PVC) Access Panels: Residential & Budget-Tier Applications

Shunshi plastic access panels are produced from ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) or PVC thermopolymers using ISO 9001-controlled injection molding processes. They are the lowest-cost option for non-fire-rated applications in residential construction, light commercial fit-outs, and budget-constrained projects where structural requirements are minimal.

Key Characteristics and Hard Limits

Full Decision Matrix: Steel vs Aluminum vs Plastic

Use this matrix as a specification-stage checklist. A single red cross against a project requirement disqualifies that material for that application.

How to Choose: 4-Step Decision Framework

Work through these four steps in order. Stop at the first step that gives you a definitive answer - don't overthink downstream steps if an upstream one eliminates your options.

1

Is the target assembly fire-rated?

Check the building plans or structural engineer's specification for the wall or ceiling where the panel will be installed. If any fire resistance rating is designated, steel is the only material that can be used. Go directly to Step 4 to resolve steel sub-type.

Rated assembly > Steel onlyNon-rated > continue to Step 2
2

What is the environmental exposure?

Will the panel face regular humidity, condensation, coastal salt air, or washdown cleaning? If yes, aluminum is the preferred choice for long-term performance without maintenance cost. Dry interior environments can use steel.

Coastal / humid / washdown > AluminumDry interior > Steel or Plastic
3

What are the structural and traffic demands?

High-traffic locations (maintenance corridors, plant rooms, public spaces) require steel or heavy-gauge aluminum. Residential and low-traffic light commercial applications can accept plastic.

High traffic / abuse risk > SteelResidential / low use > Plastic (if non-rated)
4

What is the budget and finish requirement?

For steel: choose galvanized for any location with moisture possibility, cold-rolled for genuinely dry interiors. For aluminum: confirm finish - mill, anodized, or custom RAL. For plastic: standard white is the only stocked finish; confirm if a custom color is needed before committing to volume.

Moisture risk > Galvanized steelDecorative finish > Aluminum (anodized / RAL)Budget residential > Plastic

Frequently Asked Questions

Can aluminum access panels be used in fire-rated walls?
No. Standard aluminum access panels cannot achieve fire resistance ratings because aluminum melts at approximately 660 degrees C - well below the temperatures reached during standard fire test procedures (typically 800-1000 degrees C at 60 minutes). If your project requires an access panel in a fire-rated wall or ceiling assembly, you must specify a tested and certified steel panel that matches the assembly's required rating. Contact Shunshi to confirm which steel panel models are certified for the rating and market you need.
What is the difference between galvanized and cold-rolled steel panels?
Cold-rolled steel produces a smooth surface finish suitable for dry interior applications - commercial offices, dry corridors, residential drywalls. Galvanized steel has a zinc coating (applied by hot-dip immersion) that protects the base metal against corrosion and is required for any location with persistent moisture - utility rooms, basements, plant rooms, and external or semi-external locations. For procurement purposes, always specify "hot-dip galvanized" rather than just "galvanized" to ensure you receive the correct corrosion protection standard.
Can Shunshi supply access panels with custom powder coat or RAL colors?
Yes. Both steel and aluminum panels can be factory powder-coated to standard or custom RAL colors. Standard white (RAL 9010 or RAL 9016) is stocked. Custom RAL colors are available against a minimum order quantity - include the specific RAL number in your RFQ and Shunshi's team will confirm MOQ and lead time. Factory-applied color matching is commonly specified for hospitality, healthcare, and high-end commercial projects where panel appearance is a design consideration.
Does Shunshi accept OEM orders for custom material specifications?
Yes. Shunshi has a professional R&D department with 16 patented technologies and regularly undertakes OEM and ODM projects across all three material types. Customers can provide drawings, product samples, or performance specifications. Shunshi can handle non-standard dimensions, special surface treatments, private label branding, and custom locking hardware configurations. Contact the technical sales team with your specification and required quantities to begin the development discussion.
Are plastic access panels suitable for tile bathroom walls?
Standard plastic panels are suitable for drywall installation in non-tiled bathroom walls. For tile substrates, you need a tile-ready access panel with a recessed frame designed to accept tile backer board and ceramic or porcelain tile on the door face. Shunshi offers tile-ready frame options in both aluminum and steel. Specify "tile-ready" in your RFQ along with the tile type and thickness (typically 8-12 mm for ceramic, 10-16 mm for porcelain) so the correct frame recess depth is supplied.
